no sound from blue tooth device

I have an HP Pavillion 17 notebook and does not have blue tooth.  I purchased a blue tooth USB and loaded the software.  It pairs with my devices and shows them on board but no sound comes from the blue tooth speakers.  What can I do to resolve this or does after market blue tooth not compatable.  Please advise, Thanks, Mike
