Headphones using speaker volume

Hi,

When I plug my headphones into my laptop,  it uses the speakers volume (And I guess the driver) which I have to set to below 5%. Any higher and it feels like it will blow my headphones from being too loud.

I have HP ENVY TS 17 Notebook PC

It came with hp beats audio.

I am using beats by dre headphones (brand new)

I have tried to set the default sound device to the communication headphones shown below but it wont change from speakers. When I right click on speakers or headphones and click 'test', they both come through the my headphones just fine (though the speakes is insanely loud if its not turned down below 5%)

Am I missing a driver or something? I dont to blow my headphones - I think they may have alrady been damaged as the sound is now distorted.

I would think a new laptop with beats audio software on it would play perfectly with new beats by dre headphones.

I have also installed all updates hp has from the built in sipport center.

Please help.

Thanks
