Sound Playing From Both Speakers and Headphones

I know this question has been asked a thousand times before, but I am having absolutely no luck whatsoever solving this problem.

I've put headphones in, however sound plays from both the speakers and headphones. When I click on Sound in the Control Panel, the only options I'm given are Digital Display Audio and Speaker/HP. When I play sound, even when it's coming out as dual, there is nothing else.

I've tried wiggling the cord a little bit, and sometimes it will come up with the "windows can now play sounds from this device" message, but when I click for more information, it just comes up with Speaker/HP again with default. Nothing else - no microphone anything.

How can I fix this? When I wiggle the headphone jack around, sometimes the sound will only play from the headphones, but as soon as I move my hand away, it goes back to playing dual.  Is there something wrong with the jack itself that needs to be fixed?

Please help. I'm at my wit's end and about to go spare. I'm not the best computer wise, which doesn't help.

My laptop is a HP Pavilion and I'm using Windows 8, if that helps at all.
