(HP Pavilion g4) headphones/speakers issue

I'm using HP Pavilion g4 Notebook, Windows 7. When I plugged in my earphones, the sound that I played was not coming from the earphones but it was coming from the speakers. I tried different earphones because I thought it was a problem with the earphones, but it still  wouldn't work. What should I do?
