internal microphone HP Pavilion DV7-3190eo

 Internal and external microphone does not respond. Webcam works fine.

1.        Windows is updated.
2.        I can see it – but the recording levels  do not respond. Stays with 1 green level indicator whether internal or external.
3.        Have tested listening to the microphone  – no response
4.        I see it in device manager. It works correct + driver is updated.

1.        Have downloaded most recent audio driver from HP and performed a manually update to be certain – no change
2.        Have run diagnostics from the sound recording programme – no fault detected.
3.        Have tried adding/ installing a microphone - but is stopped by: "Your current default speech engine does not support this action at this time". 
4.        Have checked the webcam/microphone cable connection to the motherboard – it is connected. However, it was not easy to connect the cable to the motherboard – it doesn’t ‘slip’ easily into place.
5.        Have checked the webcam/microphone cable connection to the display – it is connected.

How can I fix this issue
