No Sound/Recording on HP G6

I recently clicked to update my laptop to Windows 8.1, however after checking a day or two later on the  Windows Store it seems as if it hasn't updated and I'm still using Windows 8.

I've been finding that if my laptop lid has been closed for a while, when I reopen it I have no sound or recording. Sometimes it even happens randomly without me actually doing anything. I can usually tell because the light doesn't appear when I tap the mute button.

All the drivers appear to be present.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and I went into BIOS and tried to reset to defaults and reinstalled the drivers for Windows 8, sound reappears for a while as it makes sounds as if devices are being plugged and unplugged during the driver setup but after that it goes again.
I often find when I restart my laptop I have sound again but that is still only temporary and it's a massive inconvenience.

Sometimes when I try and reinstall drivers it gives me the option to overwrite existing files but then I get an error message.
Later on, before I did the BIOS reset I checked the box to delete the files to try and ensure the error message doesn't happen again.

Details of my laptop:

HP PAvilion g6-2212sa Notebook PC

Product Number:   C6S52EA
