Audio keeps turning off on it's own or cannot unmute

I have a HP Probook 4730s Notebook, just over a year old, running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

I have experienced several issues:

When I play my audio, whether it's a video, or something on iTunes or YouTube (but not specific to these applications, just to give you an idea of what I use it for) I often will get a strange distorted sound cut in and out of the speakers.  It happens often enough to be annoying, especially if using it in a presentation.

Lately, I have been having additional issues where the speakers are unmuted, I click on a video and no sound comes out.

Also, conversely, I have had the speakers muted and as much as I click on them to unmute it will not unmute.

The only thing I have found that seems to work is to reboot my computer, but sometimes I have to do that two or three times for it to work.

I have tried troubleshooting via the HP Support Assistant, which basically just tells me what I have for audio.

I went through the HP troubleshooting section for audio for this laptop and only options it gives are for Windows 8

I have tried via Control Panel to troubleshoot audio playback, it goes through and then says "Troubleshooting could not identify a problem"

What I have noticed over the last couple days is that I can reboot and have sound, leave it unmuted and then for no apparent reason (or with any consistency) all of a sudden there is no sound (even though the speakers are not muted).

Please help, thank you!
