Sound Not Working- Common Fixes Tried to no Effect; HP Pavilion dv6-3143us

I'm having trouble with my laptop's sound. I was trying to record a guitar through an external mic. The program (Ignite by Air Music) wouldn't detect the guitar sound, so I turned up the levels on the mic in recording devices. The program was able to detect it then, but soon after a loud, high pitched squeal came out of the headphones I had plugged in. I took them out and the noise didn't come through the speakers, nothing at all came out, and the noise resumed when I plugged headphones back in. The bar that you see when you click the speaker icon on the task bar would move, though, if something that normally makes sound was playing.
I then did a factory reset on the computer. Then no sound would come out of headphones or speakers at all any more, but the bar would still move as before. I tried uninstalling and re-installing and rolling back the audio driver called "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC" to no effect. "Speakers and Headphones" (1 device in itself on my PC) is set as the default device. (There's another device called "Independent Headphones", and both run on the same driver, but neither device works).
Any idea what the issue is?
