Compaq Presario V6000 - No Sound Device Installed Error

Hi - I have restored my Presarion V6630EM to fcatory settings and slowly used Windows Update to bring it back to Windows Vista Servcie Pack 2.  At some point during the upgrade process, the speaker icon in the system tray developed a 'Red X' and I have tried in vain to update the Conexant drivers from the HP Website.  All I get when installing is 'No Sound Device Found'; the same when I look at the Properties.  It doesn't even appear in System Manager.  All I get with sound is a very loud 'BEEP' when errors or warnings appear (which I think this sound is coming from another type of speaker?).

I have updated the BIOS to latest version, run HP PC Helathcheck, Driver Updates etc but all is 'up to date'.

Any ideas?

PS - before I restored this machine, the same issue had occurred i.e. Red X.  When i started the process to restore from the disk image, after the initial restore the sound was fine - during upgrade to Vista SP1 it was fine, then at some point during updates it went back to Red X.
